I greatly enjoy working with students, having tutored, taught, and coached students for the past thirty years. My degrees are from Harvard College (B.A.) and the University of Chicago (M.A., Ph.D.). During the past ten years I have tutored for Wyzant, and several other tutoring services. I have taught at elementary, middle, high school, and college levels.

When I begin a new tutorial, I take a few minutes to become familiar with the student and her/his interests. After asking abou...
Richard has been tutoring my two sons for several months. He is a good communicator and very articulate. He makes every lesson interesting for my sons. He helped with homework assignments when we asked. He brought relevant material to the lessons if we had no particular request. I am very pleased with the tutoring so far.

Richard was one of the few people I?ve met who could truly appreciate and bring out the intellectual side out of a student. He is brilliant at grasping meaning behind emotion and thought, and passionate about understanding the life stories of his students. In just a few classes, he was able to understand my intellectual and personal background, and point me in the right direction in terms of not only my studies but also my career and life. His advice was extremely important to me as a high school student. With his generous encouragements, I?ve learned to believe in my talents and potential even more. Richard is one of the best tutors I?ve ever had, because he inspires students to be confident and see the power of their own intellectual curiosity. Furthermore, Richard is meticulous when analyzing essays, eloquent and knowledgeable when having philosophical conversations, and attentive as a teacher and person. Overall, it was a great choice choosing him to be my tutor. He brought the best out of me.
- Michelle T. from Palo Alto, CA
Richard patiently conversed with my children in German. They each had time to learn with him. He focused on grammar and enhanced their understanding of language learning. He quizzed my daughter on verb conjugation and helped my younger son with noun articles and general conversation. He gave me several great tips as a parent to develop their German on our own. He was very kind, patient and considerate. Worth every star!

Richard is very professional and passionate in teaching. He has been tutoring my girls (fifth and second grade) reading and writing for one year. Not only have the girls shown a lot of improvement in reading and writing, but also they have become more enthusiastic about reading and writing. Richard is very knowledgeable about literature that is suitable, useful, and interesting for students at different levels, which is very helpful for parents who are not native English speakers. My girls have been reading all the books he recommended and are looking forward to reading the books he recommends at the next level. Richard encourages the girls to think during the reading by asking relevant questions about the book, and he encourages the girls to write about the story and their thoughts about the story after they finish reading it. With Richard?s help, the girls not only learn how to read but also learn about life, about how to be a good person from these books. He helps the girls in grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, and logical thinking while reviewing their writings, so the girls learn this fundamental knowledge in an interactive and fun way. Whenever possible, Richard supplies the girls with historical knowledge that gives context to their reading and writing. Even though my girls are still very young, Richard has been providing us with useful information about future school (scholarship) applications and test preparation, which is very helpful to know ahead of time. Richard introduced a few SAT critical reading questions to my fifth grader, and taught her tricks for solving the problems from time to time during the lessons. I could not believe that my fifth grader could already do (and guess) pretty well when I gave her a SAT critical reading example recently! Richard is very reliable and flexible as well for the lessons. He is intelligent, knowledgeable, experienced and patient. My girls look forward eagerly to their sessions with Richard every week. As parents, we feel Richard genuinely cares about our children and wants to help them succeed not only now but also in the future.

Richard is by far the best tutor that we had for either my son or my daughter! My son absolutely loves him and can't wait to meet him the next time. Very professional, he really helps my son to develop appropriate writing techniques and the correct approach to writing essays. He is extremely knowledgeable in not only language arts, but in many other subjects as well!

Arguably the smartest, kindest, and most knowledgeable tutor and instructor I've ever experienced in my 16+ years of education. Richard has helped me gain confidence in courses ranging from history to statistics, and in projects ranging from my senior thesis to my various extracurricular pursuits. I consider myself extremely blessed to be one of his students, and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for help in any subject. He's a treasure trove of insight and experience for anyone and everyone hungry to learn as much as they can from him. Five stars!

Richard is an excellent tutor and his support has been invaluable! I received an "A" in every class he tutored me in, which is excellent, as these are graduate level classes. He is very reliable and always willing to support.

Mr. Richard (as we call him) is a fantastic tutor. He has an ingrained knowledge of everything of-importance to help my 5th grader with his homework. He can easily move from math, to English, to social studies and back again. He's extremely flexible and friendly, and is always on time. Mr. Richard was an awesome find for us, and I highly recommend him.
- Tom B. from Redwood City, CA
Richard is extremely knowledgeable in the subject of AP European History. He doesn't need a textbook to discuss a topic! He has really been of great help so far. We will continue to have him work with our daughter as long as we can afford it!
- Shikha H. from San Mateo, CA
Richard has been amazing about scheduling appointments around our busy schedule. He is always on time and comes with a patient, positive attitude and a sense of humor. He's given my daughter many test-taking tips and helped her study for the ISEE test. He knows how to explain math concepts thoroughly, and has great advice about how to write a memorable essay. We are so grateful for Richard's help!
- Catherine M. from Redwood City, CA
I can't sing enough praises for Richard. He was the perfect match for my son as he prepared for the HSPT exam. He helped him prepare and taught him techniques that he would not have discovered on his own. Richard not only conveyed great information, but also related to my son on a level that was easy for him to understand. He even thanked us for hiring Richard... miracles do happen! Thank you, Richard.
- Serena L. from San Mateo, CA
Richard is a great tutor who helped me get through AP European History. He's very helpful when it comes to analyzing different aspects of history in ways that I wouldn't think to.
- Mayeesha G. from San Mateo, CA
I was a visiting student researcher at Stanford and wanted to improve my writing and speaking skills for academic purposes. Richard is just the best for that! He is very knowledgeable, patient, enthusiastic, not to mention that he's also a great listener and speaker! I found out many interesting things not only about English language, but also about the U.S. history, politics and everyday life. Highly recommend him for all foreign students!
- Igor C. from Menlo Park, CA
Richard conveys great enthusiasm about the topics he teaches, whether it is Norse mythology, German grammar, or history. He has passed on a love of knowledge and an ear for language to my son, who is in 7th grade. Richard also displays a true historian's sense of a particular time period-- he is able to invoke curiosity about what it was like to live in that time period, and how things were both similar to and different from the present.
- Lucia O. from Menlo Park, CA
Richard has tutored my high school senior in AP Government. Richard is always punctual. His knowledge base of the subject matter is very in depth and professorial. Richard is like having a college professor visit your home. He is above all kind and concerned about the student. I would highly recommend him anytime.
- Megan A. from Burlingame, CA
We are very fortunate to have found Richard. My son is applying for a scholarship and needed help for SAT study and essay writing. Richard worked patiently and diligently with him to prep for the SATs. He made it fun and interesting, especially when helping increase my son?s vocabulary. My son ended up improving his score by over 100 points! When it comes to help with essays, Richard is really good about letting my son take the lead and do the actual writing but he helps him if he is stuck and gives great suggestions along the way. My son really enjoys working with Richard and I highly recommend him.
