Is is awkward to request to connect with people on LinkedIn you weren't really friends with in high school or college but that LinkedIn recommends to you?

It's definitely not awkward. I've linked with people I may have spoken to once or twice, or only know through other people. Having that connection can be extremely helpful in the future, when you're looking for someone with experience in a certain field or even someone that can help you with some advice on what they think of their current or past positions.
I have one word to say: networking. It is never a bad thing to request people on LinkedIn because those people can ultimately help you network and possibly help you find your dream job. You have to be assertive when it comes to your future. However, don't connect with people who you don't know at all.
I don't think it's awkward at all! If it is someone that you think could be relevant to what you want to do in your future, then hit that connect button. Getting jobs is all about connections, so the more you have, the better. I've gotten plenty of requests from people I was not close with in high school. We are all trying to help each other out at this point, so definitely don't stress about it.
LinkedIn is like Facebook when it first started, you friended everyone you knew or might know. It's a numbers game. Yes, you should connect with them, even if you weren't friends. LinkedIn is for your professional network and can help you in the future when looking for a job or even looking to hire someone for your job. Connect and grow your network!
