Five Things To Do on a Gloomy Day

By Hannah Butler on February 12, 2013

Waking up to a gray window and the sound of rain hitting the glass is a sign of a possible boring day. There isn’t a lot of motivation to get out of bed or go outside and deal with the gloomy weather. Might as well lay around and only get up for the bathroom and food… but where’s the fun in that? I’ve dealt with my fair share of rainy days trapped in my house so I’ve compiled a few ways to make dull days more entertaining and less depressing.

1. Have a movie marathon

Rarely do we get the chance to sit and relax while spending the day watching our favorite movies. Gather up a couple of friends, select a few movies and get into cozy sweats. To top off your movie party, find some sort of junk food (I know you have some somewhere) and order some delivery! This is a great opportunity to lounge around and share some laughs with friends.

2. Make up a game to play

No one is too old to play games! Being trapped in your house forces the mind to start cranking its imagination wheels. My sister and I created a game where we play soccer against our dog while having Italian accents… weird, huh? The strangest and most random moments build unforgettable memories. Think of random activities, a few rules and you’ve invented yourself a game!

3. Workout!

“I never have time to workout.” “I have too much homework.” “It’s too late to go to the gym now.” I have heard all of these excuses (and I might have said them all too), but now that you are on the computer reading how to cheer up your gloomy day, might as well search for several at-home exercises! After working out, your body can give you the energy and sense of satisfaction that will brighten your day. So why not try a few yoga poses or a couple fat-burning exercises? It can only help!

4. Pamper yourself

If you have the extra time on your hands, take too long in the shower or spend a few more minutes getting ready in the morning. It’s better to think of a gloomy day as a day of relaxation, rather than a day where there’s nothing to do. It’s easy to get carried away with time you put aside for yourself, take advantage of it.

5. Read a good book

Homework can take up a student’s day. No matter how much a person does, there always seems to be one more assignment that was forgotten. Instead of reading the next three chapters assigned by your professor, pick a book that you’ve never read, kick back and relax. While you’re at it, take a nap; catching a few “Zs” won’t hurt anybody. Let school leave the brain for a couple hours and do something you’re not required to finish.

After following these suggestions, you can use the occasional gloomy day as an excuse to let loose, be lazy and enjoy a chill day.
