Good New Music to Listen to for Halloween

By Alexis Sanchez on October 7, 2019

So, I love listening to music and creating current mood playlists (especially to take a break from graduate school). To prepare for this month’s spooky festivities, I have a review of good new music to listen to for Halloween! Other than watching Hocus Pocus for the third time, you can listen to these good ghostly tunes as you prepare to carve your pumpkins and collect your candy. I don’t know about most people, but my favorite kind of Halloween music has more eerie and dark vibes that you play when you get ready to go to Halloween Horror Nights or Howl-O-Scream. Before you head out to your friend’s Halloween party or go to the ghost-ery store to start decorating for your own Halloween shindig, here’s a review of good new music to listen to for Halloween and to include in your Halloween playlist!

“Wrong Turn” by Kim Petras (but consider instead, the entire album of Turn Off the Light)

Kim Petras created an ENTIRE album for the sake of making good new music for Halloween and that’s why I have to start off with her (with a shout out to the entire album!). I might just even have to review the entire album as we get closer to Halloween, it’s just that good. Wrong Turn has a good high paced, pop sound that goes well with Kim Petras saying you got caught and there’s nowhere left to go. Her voice sounds so soothing and like she’s putting a siren’s song on you to just give in to it. It’s definitely a good song to include on any Halloween playlist!

Honorable mentions: “Tell Me It’s a Nightmare”, “Demons”, “Close Your Eyes”, have I mentioned the entire album of Turn Off the Light?

“Teeth” by 5 Seconds of Summer

The band, 5 Seconds of Summer, has been releasing more heavy pop sounding songs recently venturing into industrial pop, but their single “Teeth” was the most intense of the songs that they have released. This is highlighted by the band experiencing an experiment gone wrong at the dentist’s office in the official music video. Also, you have to love the heavy synth beats and the heavy breaths in the background as the lyrics “never ever ever ever let go” are sung, which gives the perfect dark yet bouncy vibe that is perfect music to listen to for Halloween and on your playlist.

“bury a friend” by Billie Eilish

Just from the title of the song alone and the beginning heavy, fast-paced beats, Billie Eilish is already exuding Halloween. The lyrics combined with the many different synths and the electronic effects on Billie Eilish’s vocals keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time. There are even multiple times when you hear knocking and the sound of a creaking door as if the monster is coming closer and closer. Billie Eilish knows about how to make good music to listen to for Halloween!

Honorable mentions: “all the good girls go to hell”

Post Malone – Goodbyes ft Young Thug

Even though this song doesn’t outwardly scream Halloween, watching the video and seeing Post Malone as a zombie come back to life stumbling through the town definitely helps with the Halloween feel. The background instrumental looping ominous ‘ooo’s’ and Post Malone’s melodic voice add to the zombie feel as well. Definitely watch the music video for the full Halloween vibe!

“Stranger Things” Theme

I know, I know. This one doesn’t have lyrics to it but I never mind a good instrumental track especially when it’s a mood-setting playlist. Due to the mysterious, dark mood of the show Stranger Things overall, their theme track highlights this through increasing 80s synth beats that builds over deep alternating sounds in the background. It’s a good set up for the show and definitely good background music to listen to for Halloween!

Honorable mention: The entire Stranger Things 1, 2, and 3 soundtracks. (I specifically think the Stranger Things 3 soundtrack has the darkest synth sounds emphasizing the intensity and is the best fitting for your Halloween playlist)
