As a college student, you likely have a tight budget that prevents you from having a large apartment. Even if your apartment has a lot of space, you may have a roommate or two. Either way, your apartment has limited space. The key to making the most of your limited space is staying organized.

Purchase some cute boxes and bins

Boxes and bins are a classic way to organize your belongings. Have a bin for each type of item you have and keep the bins in the rooms you use the items. There are bins in a variety of styles and colors, so you will be able to find something that goes with the décor in your apartment. Even if you get plain bins, you can decorate them yourself. Label them with what is in the box and if you have roommates, be sure to put your name on your bins.

Invest in a few space saver bags

If you live in your apartment year-round due to a lease, you likely have a lot of seasonal clothes. Some students are unable to go home for various reasons, so they are left with a ton of clothes they are not wearing on a regular basis. They may also have seasonal bedding. This can make their closets and other storage areas full to capacity, even if there are not too many items within the storage place. Using safe saver bags can save much-needed space. These bags usually fit several items and use a vacuum to suck the air out, which allows the container to be more condensed. This helps you to have more room. Space saver bags can even be used while moving, as they can make clothing and bedding items more compact.

Maximize your closet space

Even if you share a bedroom, chances are, you have your own closet within the apartment. Knowing how to make the most of your closet space is crucial for optimizing the amount of space you have within your apartment. Your closet is likely small as well, so it is important that you utilize the space as well as possible.

If you have a bathroom closet, have small boxes for dental care, first aid, medicine, and any other categories of items you have. Have separate laundry basket for you and your roommates if you share a bathroom, and make sure you label medications and other belongings. If you and your roommates have different favorite colors, get towels and washcloths in your favorite colors to ensure you keep them separated.

Use vertical hangers. If you have a lot of clothes, vertical hangers can help you decrease the space the clothes take up. Sort your pants, shirts, and other items that hang and use a vertical hanger for each category. This way, you allow yourself to have room for other items that you need.

Get plastic drawers for your closet. This will help you have room for shoes, scarves, and purses you may keep in your closet. Label what is in each drawer so that you know where things are and so that you do not put things where they do not belong.

Make the most of your furniture

You have to buy furniture for your apartment, so you might as well get as much out of it as you possibly can. Buy furniture that has many purposes. For example, if you are buying a TV stand, buy one that has shelves or closets that you can store things in. You can put things live DVD’s, remotes, or video games in those storage places. Also, some ottomans have storage units built in. Use the space to put books, chargers, or other items in them. That way, your furniture can help you stay organized.

If you have space under your bed, use it. Put a fireproof safe and file cabinets under the bed to help you stay organized and to keep your important documents in a safe spot. You can also put suitcases you have in there so that you have them out of the way. Also, you can get beds that have shelves so you can put a variety of items on them.

Have a place for your keys

At one point or another, you will probably lose your keys. However, this can be avoided if you have a designated place in your apartment for your keys. Get key hooks or a small dish to put your keys in. If you have roommates, put your names on the key hooks or have your own dishes. You could even get cool keychains so that you can tell your keys apart. Having a place to put them will help you be sure they do not get lost in your apartment, as long as you remember to put them in their proper place.

Being organized can seem overwhelming if you are not already, but once you get organized, your life will be less cluttered and you will have more breathing room.
