3 Reasons You Should Appreciate Beyonce's Formation Video

By Brielle Olorunda on February 12, 2016

Beyonce caught the attention of millions of viewers during the Superbowl halftime show on Sunday night (Feb. 7), while performing her new single, “Formation”. Fans from the “Beyhive” immediatley went to twitter and other social media platforms to express their excitement, but many other viewers weren’t so happy about her performance. In fact, a few argued that Beyonce’s song and video promoted reverse racism, and an “anti-cop” movement. Many have failed to notice that Beyonce’s video actually promotes a positive message of empowerment for African American women across the world, and touches on a deeper issue that many people just don’t understand. Here are five reasons why you should learn to appreciate Beyonce’s Formation half time performance and video, instead of hating it.

1. It’s Teaches African American Women to Appreciate Their Bodies

Whether you want to believe it or not, we live in a world that is dominated by Caucasian standards of beauty.  Beyonce hired back up dancers for her performance with natural hair, beautiful bodies, and a level of confidence that couldn’t be shaken. This is the perfect example that our African American girls need, we don’t have to buy weaves, eyelashes, and skin brightening makeup to feel good about ourselves.

2. It’s a Visual Homage to the Black Panther Party

Which, by the way, doesn’t promote racism.  It’s practice helps African Americans across the world and helps with monitoring the behavior of police officers and challenge police brutality.  The BPP did many other positive things such as organize dozens of community programs such as free breakfast for children, health clinics, and shoes for children. The movement was largely based in the south and around the demands for desegregation of schools, busses, and more. Doesn’t sound much like the promotion of racism to me.

3.  It’s your IDGAF Anthem

Yes, I said the unthinkable. Beyonce has constantly been criticized for saying that she doesn’t sing about anything substantial in her music, and when she finally does–no one is happy. The Super bowl performance & Formation video just shows how much she doesn’t care what you think, or about any of her haters.
