The Pope In Sheep's Clothing

By Camilo Echeverri Bernal on July 21, 2014

Just so you know, I used to think the Pope was the most amazing guy. Even John Paul II, back in the day.

I guess it’s an easy thing to do when you grow up in a Catholic country. The Pope is essentially a super hero, without action figures. Wait, never mind.

So, not long after I left the Catholic faith, I learned that John Paul and his successor, Emperor Palpatine–also known as Benedict XVI–had covered up hundreds if not thousands of child-abuse cases. There are even books on the subject, a particularly poignant one called “ A Gospel of Shame.” It was truly eye-opening.

And in the centuries this might have been going on, it was only after or around the death of John Paul that we first learned about this.

Come Benedict, or simply Joseph Ratzinger, who though no more virtuous than his predecessor, received the full brunt of the child-rape accusations. As he himself oversaw so many cases, it did nothing other than give priests a slap on the wrist and move them around like chess pieces. Ratzinger only did what was best for his beloved Church and its propaganda of righteousness, anti-contraception and homophobia.

It forgot, however, to take care of its most vulnerable members. According to the latest Pontiff, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, also known as Francis, one in 50 priests is a pedophile.

However, we cannot know with full certainty, as the Pope himself might be making these numbers up whilst still appealing to the angry masses who threatened to burn his predecessors at the stake. As Archbishop, he wasn’t exactly vocal about the scandal. This is the Pope in sheep’s clothing.

So, why, pray tell, am I still unconvinced by this clown? It’s not so much that he tries so hard to be likeable, and that there are articles lauding his good deeds. And he has done good things, don’t get me wrong.

Perhaps what makes me dislike him is the fact that he still espouses the same kind of bigoted nonsense as the others before him, though he phrases these things differently so that the public doesn’t peg him as a sexist or an otherwise dislikeable douchebag.

He’s quite the skilled rhetorician. He is a two-faced bigot, to be perfectly honest. He says whatever suits him at a particular point in time. Remember the time he said he was okay with gays as long as they welcomed God in their hearts? Well, he was bluffin’.

We aren’t hearing about his slip-ups. Instead, we are being told about his humility. You know, because as long as he appears humble he must be. Just like a wolf when he wears a sheep’s skin he becomes a sheep, right?

Bergoglio is still as anti-contraceptives as Paul and Ratzinger. He might hide under the guise of humility and kissing and washing the feet of the destitute, but like Mother Teresa of Calcutta–another character regarded with such reverence–cares little for the poor and more about what people are doing with their own bodies, even if family planning might end poverty.

And speaking of poverty, the Pope might claim humility and wishing to live in a more Christ-like fashion, but though he foregoes his apartments and his nice worldly possessions he decries and rallies against, he still makes use of the expensive more lavish apartments for receiving guests and impressing them with his simple life.

I guess being the vicar of Christ on Earth doesn’t meaning emulating his boss.

I guess where I am getting at is that we should be wary of all leaders who command such wealth, power and influence. Whether they present themselves as benevolent or as intimidating, or decide to wear different items of clothing to appear more like the common people, the fact still remains that it is all an act.

Bergoglio is still as bad as popes past, and even though he takes selfies and might engage on social media, his policies on the aforementioned issues are still out-dated and corrosive.

We see your true colors, Bergoglio, and we aren’t fooled.
